Lake baikal is the oldest and deepest lake in the world. It is located in Southeastern Siberia. The lake have a depth of 1700 m and it formed 25 million years ago. The 20 percentage of total fresh water in the world also contain within lake baikal. The lake is also surrounded by scenic areas that are protected by the government. It is also listed within UNESCO’s world heritage sites.
There are 1200 monuments in total situated within baikal region, have many cultural, archaeological and historical values. It is also home for 1340 species of animals. Many of them endemic to lake baikal region. The surrounding mountains, boreal forest and islands also makes lake baikal region to one of most biodiverse site in the world.
